Excerpt from an article I'm working on called "Guardian of the Gates."

These days, I gaze at my parents and within each of them, all the genders blend together, like relaxing the eyes and seeing double. Of course, if I must, I can downshift a dimension or two, and see the world through the binary lens. But from a multi-layered consciousness, the grocery store salesman and the woman who drives the bus are flamboyantly grotesque caricatures of each opposite, dutifully unaware of the performance. So when one of them utters a “she” or throws a suspiciously scrutinizing glance at me, I only hope that I can laugh at the fragile mask of humans terrified to connect.
